Augmented Reality pushback
Just some quick report back from the Augmented Reality front lines. The Google Glass project is still garnering lots of attention from both evangelists and cynics. And whilst there is plenty of ‘whizz-bang’ enthusiasm of the tech sector as this article illustrates, there are also myriad concerns as to the potential for these devices to change our lives, the central thrust of this chilling little short story.
It’s also proving a rich vein for comedians with both SNL and this guy getting in on the act.
In the middle of all this I am wondering if there was as much push-back and cynicism when mobile phones were first introduced. My memory seems to suggest no, and that many of the complaints really started to come about when the technology began to appear in our lives – as opposed to whilst still in development as AR is. This makes me wonder if people are actually starting to value their remaining privacy – now that that battle has been all but lost. ‘Stop the Cyborgs‘ is an interesting blog focusing on the privacy and ethical concerns about AR – and, to be honest – there are a lot of very legitimate concerns here.
